Recently, Rieger Homes announced that it is teaming with Oil Free Energy Solutions, LLC and installing a geothermal system in a home we are building at Stratford Farms in the Town of Poughkeepsie, to heat and cool a home without the use of traditional fuel oil or natural gas.  Geothermal technology not only benefits our environment, it substantially reduces monthly energy bills and has substantial available tax credits.

Great news – the house has been started and is being insulated.  In conjunction with Rieger Homes’ High Performance, Energy Efficient Home package, we use a combination of insulation types and installation techniques that substantially exceed the requirements of the New York State Building Code. The home has been air sealed, while the walls are still open, so that we can keep as much of the heat and A/C in the home as possible after you move in. We will also install additional 2-part spray foam, in the attic, to take advantage of the great insulating and air sealing benefits that this product offers. By following these, and many other energy saving guidelines, we can have the geothermal system designed for maximum efficiency, while keeping the cost of occupancy as low as possible. It really is all about paying attention to the little details at just the right time during construction.

How does it work?  As described by Oil Free Energy Solutions, “Geothermal Systems take advantage of the heat energy stored in the Earth’s crust to heat and cool your home.  In our area the ground is a constant 54°.  A geothermal heat pump simply moves this energy from one place to another.  In the summer it uses the ground temperature to help cool your home.  In the winter it uses the ground temperature to help heat your home.  Since you are always starting at 54°, it takes much less energy to heat or cool your home.  Typically about 70% less energy than a traditional heating and cooling system.”
